Thermal bonding of non-woven fabrics can be used to reinforce fiber webs composed of thermoplastic synthetic fibers, such as polyester, polypropylene, etc., which are commonly used in the production of non-woven fabrics. Since cotton, wool, hemp, viscose and other fibers do not have thermoplasticity, the fine net formed by such fibers alone cannot be reinforced with thermal gel. However, a small amount of cotton, wool and other fibers can be added to the thermoplastic fiber web to improve some properties of the non-woven fabric, but generally not more than 50%. For example, a hot-rolled bonded non-woven fabric made of cotton/polyester with a mixing ratio of 30/70 can significantly improve moisture absorption, feel and softness, and is very suitable for medical and health care products. The strength of the non-woven fabric decreases as the content of cotton fiber increases. Of course, for a complete non-thermoplastic fiber network, powder thermal bonding reinforcement can also be considered.
Thermally bonded nonwoven fabrics can be heated in different ways. The bonding method and process, fiber type and carding process, and fiber web structure will ultimately affect the performance and appearance of the nonwoven fabric.
For fiber webs with low melting point or bicomponent fibers, hot roll bonding or hot air bonding can be used. For ordinary thermoplastic fibers and their blends with non-thermoplastic fiber webs, hot rolling bonding can be used.
In addition, thermal bonding is also commonly used in the production of composite non-woven fabrics (such as melt-laminated non-woven fabrics), or as a supplement to other reinforcement methods. For example, mixing a small amount of fibers with a low melting point into the fiber web can significantly improve the strength and dimensional stability of the needle punched product after being strengthened by hot air bonding.
